Emergency Physicians Insurance Company Risk Retention Group (EPIC) was licensed in August 2003 as a reciprocal insurance exchange by the Nevada Department of Business & Industry Division of Insurance. EPIC was the first reciprocal retention group licensed under Nevada captive statutes. EPIC is a member of the Physicians Insurers Association of America (PIAA).
EPIC offers medical professional liability insurance to qualified emergency medical groups, their emergency physicians and allied health care staff. EPIC is the first medical professional liability insurance company specializing in emergency medicine on a national basis that is owned exclusively by its policyholders, all of whom are emergency physicians and ER groups. EPIC is approved to write business in 49 states and the District of Columbia. |

A Risk Retention Group (RRG) is a special purpose liability insurance company formed under the federal Risk Retention Act of 1986. This law was enacted by the federal government in 1986 to respond to diminished capacity in the liability insurance marketplace. A Risk Retention Group obtains a license in one state and then must register in every state where it intends to write insurance. Each state’s department of insurance reviews and approves the financials of the RRG on an annual basis.
