The Newsest Risk in the Emergency Department

Social networks have become pervasive with all age groups and demographics tweeting, blogging and posting on Facebook. But when it comes to the ED, it is critical for providers to understand what is and what is not appropriate to be sharing on social networks, especially as it relates to patient care.

EPIC’s Graham Billingham, MD, FACEP, President and CEO and Chairman Ed Boudreau, DO, discuss the risks associated with providers engaging in social networking activities and offer strategies to help protect both the physician and the practice group. Along with examples of physicians who have misused social media with career-altering results, they implore viewers to “think before you send.” Billingham also suggests that groups have a written guideline for physicians’ use of social media and recommends that the guideline be in synch with hospital policy.

EPIC has previously published an Alert on this risk topic.

Big Risks, Little Patients

It is often the littlest patients who pose some of the biggest risks when it comes to the emergency room setting. For that reason, EPIC has published several Alerts related to pediatric care in the ED ranging from infants with fevers to CT in children with minor head injuries and even how to handle foreign bodies in little noses and ears.

In the adjacent video Jeanie Taylor, RN, BSN, MS, Vice President, Patient Safety and Risk Solutions and Vice President of Risk, EPIC discusses some of the most common claims associated with pediatric patients with EPIC President and CEO, Graham Billingham, M.D. FACEP.

Ms. Taylor addresses the unique challenges of treating both the child and the parents while managing everybody’s expectations for care.
